- Realist view on WAR & PEACE
- STATE EGOISM
- Realists believe that states pursue the national interest.
- Meaning, it will inevitably come into conflict, sometimes in military terms.
- Rivalry between and amongst states reflects the inherent tendency within human nature
- Self-seeking competition and aggression.
- ANARCHY & SELF HELP
- States are forced to rely to self help, due to an international system of anarchy.
- This must happen in order to survive, ad ensure security, through military power.
- As a result, states will build up their military force, to threaten other states or NGOs.
- E.g. The COLD WAR between Russia and USA.
- BALANCE OF POWER
- Balance of power is the principal factor to prevent war.
- This is where states avoid war if they calculate that their chances of victory are slim.
- Thus, states curb hegemonic ambitions.
