- Realist Theories of Crime & Deviance
- Right Realism
- Many causes of crime, the govt. is incapable of sorting it out but it can be controlled.
- Only way to prevent crime is through stricter policing to stop minor issues becoming bigger.
- WILSON
- People are more likely to commit crime if they haven't been socialised adequately (people from families of low intelligence)
- WILSON & KELLING
- 'Broken Window' hypothesis to explain how crime flourishes - any damage left unattended shows no one cares so leads to more crime.
- Functionalism link

- Left Realism
- Causes of crime: relative deprivation, marginalisation & subcultures reflecting anger at exclusion.
- Address problems with better collaborative policing, better housing and facilities & recreating a sense of community.
- YOUNG
- Criminals should be seen as victims of the capitalist system and we should focus on crimes of the powerful. Role of criminology was to provide relevant solutions for crime to limit the harm it was doing to poor communities.
- RUNCIMAN
- Political revolutions occurred when the poor became aware of the scale of their differences to the rich. Generally accepting of poverty and lack of power.
- LEA & YOUNG
- its not poverty or lack of jobs that causes crime but the expectations if the youth leads to resentment as what they earn differs from their aspirations.
