    • Statistics
      • Black people are 3 times more likely to be arrested
      • Black men were about 8.4 times more likely to be arrested for robbery compared with White men.
      • BAME people were stopped at a rate 4.1 times higher than White people.
    • Reasons for disparities
      • Left Realism
        • Relative deprivation- Where people feel deprived in relation to others
        • Marginalisation- Where people lack resources to participate in society
        • Focuses on preventing crime and understanding why . Improving living standards and working with communities
        • Criticised for not identifying underling capitalist structures  that cause inequity and being more costly than RR. Ignores vicimes
      • Right Realism
        • Rational choice theory- individuals evaluate whether or no they can get away with crime and they have free choice
        • The Underclass (Murray)- Welfare dependency leads parents to socialise children to be irresponsible and cut off from society
        • Focuses on increasing surveillance, increasing punishment for minor crimes and a zero tolerance approach
        • Criticised for ignoring the underlining causes of crime and other factors that may cause crime. Ignores victimes
      • Labelling Theory
        • An internationalist theory that focuses on stereotyping and bias
        • Moral entrepreneur- Group person or organisation with the power to create or enforce rules and impose their own def
        • Self fulfilling prophecy
      • Moral panic - A moral panic is an exaggerated outburst of public concern over the morality or behaviour of a group in society.
      • Strain Theory
        • Criticism that it was over 30 years ago and society has changed
        • Reactions to the strain: Conformity, Innovation, Ritualism,        Retreatism         Rebellion
        • Social factors such as lack of quality education or employment can cause frustration. Difference between what we want and what we have
    • Institutionalised racism discusses how white ideology dominates institutions within society and creates negative bias against minority groups
    • Stephan Lawrence - Murdered in the 90s in a racially motivated attack. At the time nobody was bough to justice and raised questions about racism within the justice system

      • Marxists criticise statistics as being manipulated by ruling classes therefore are unreliable
      • Media influence- Modern day examples include media encouraging islamaphobia
      • Family structure- Lack of a fatherly role can lead children to crime. Children with absent fathers are more likely to commit crime in African American households
