  • PROTEINS AND MUTATIONS
    • Grouping organisms
      • Proteins=amino acid chains. Have different functions like structural, hormonal and carrier -
      • proteins own amino acid order and numer making them different
    • Enymes
      • Enzymes are biological catalysts (catalyze photo and protein synthesis + respiration)
      • Lock and key theory: substrate molecule fits into active site of enzyme
      • Optimum temp and pH different for each enzyme- anything away from this will slow down the reaction.
      • Q10=rate at higher temperature / rate at lower temperature [10 degree difference]
      • Q10 measure hows rate of reaction is affected by temperature
    • Mutations
      • May occur spontaneously or radiation. - may lead to different proteins produced - usually harmful doesn't have to be - maybe advantage
      • Genes are the same but not proteins are not the same. Genes are switched off in different cells
      • Gene mutations alter/prevent protein through changing DNA base code and so changing the order of amino acids
