Processes of erosion

  • Processes of erosion
    • Hydraulic action
      • Sheer force of water hitting the bed
      • This is most effective when the water is moving fast.
    • Abrasion
      • Occurs when the load of the river repeatedly hits off the river bed and banks
      • Causes bits of the river beds to fall off
    • Attrition
      • When stones and boulders carried by the river knock against each other.
      • Load breaks down and becomes smaller
    • Solution
      • Only occurs when on permeable rocks such as chalk
      • This occurs when the rocks are soluble in rainwater
      • Becomes part of the water as they are dissolved
