    • Participants
      • 2463 navy and marine personnel (over 100 of which were officers)
      • Avrage age of 22.3 years with varying backgrounds (2/3 had degrees)
      • Participants (and medical staff) did not know of aims to advoid demand charecteristics.
    • Pen and paper, self-administered questionnaire
      • Participants asked to fill out military version of the Schedule of Recent events, to documents family, community and social changes ect.
      • Each SRE factor was assigned a Life Change Unit (LCU)
      • Filled out every 6 months for two years.
    • The ships
      • Each participants went on a 6 - 8 month navy tour on one of three ships
      • Ships were located on wither the coast of Vietnam or in the Mediterranean
      • Data was collected from the chips sick bay; noted number, type and servity
        • Discounted repeated illness for the same person, pre-existing illnesses and those illness thought to be due to work advoidance
