  • Pride's Purge 6 December 1648
    • Army victories in the 2nd C.W were seen as a sign of God backing them
    • Levellers were pressing for a radical settlement. The 2nd Agreement of the People published after the Purge
    • The Army rank and file were threatening another revolt
    • A treaty now would isolate the Army. It could fight but had no political support
    • The army justify its actions but new resistance theories from Iretons remonstrance of 16 Nov. From the Levellers' Agreement of the people.
    • The collapse of the Independent party meant that the Army's interests were no longer being protected in Parl.
    • If Parl. made peace w/ the King on the basis of the Newport proposals, the Army's victories would have been pointless. The King would have lost the war and won the peace
