- In the 1960's the leader, Novotny was unpopular
- Novotny lead a repressive country with secret police preventing any opposition.
- Novotny's economy was struggling
- In January 1968 Novotny was replaced by Dubcek
- Dubcek was friends with the Russian leader Brezhnev, but he still wanted reform
- Dubcek wanted "socialism with a human face"
- The Prague Spring was the name given to the reforms made
- These reforms included relaxing censorship so people could criticize the government, allowing opposing parties and free trade and profit making
- The reforms were popular with young people, students and workers
- Many people took the chance to critisise communism.
- The Russian leader was shocked and knew he had to do something
- Brezhnev tried to make a deal and asked Dubcek to undo the reforms fearing the breakup of the USSR sphere of influence. Dubcek refused

- Russia invaded with tanks and despite Dubcek ordering no one to retaliate, there was passive resistance.
