  • Physics Unit 1
    • Convection
      • Happens in liquids and gases
        • Particles do NOT expand
          • If the particles are more dense, they float down
            • If the particles are less dense, they float up
    • Radiation
      • Involves only waves
        • Black is the best absorber and emitter
          • Silver is the worst absorber and emitter
            • Makes the light BOUNCE off the surface
    • Specific Heat Capactiy
      • E= M x C x O
        • Energy transferred= Mass X SHC x Temp change
      • Measured in Joules
      • Measure of thermal energy contained in an object
    • Energy use in home
      • KWh= kw x h
        • Example 0.16KW x 24 = 3.84 KWh used in home
          • Finding price by using energy used = KWh x Price (in pence or pounds)
            • Example- 110KWh x 0.15 = £16.50 9Electricity bill)
    • Waves
      • Vibrations that transfer energy from place to place without matter.
      • Some waves must travel through a substance.(Sound waves, Seismic waves)
        • Amplitude- maximum disturbance from its undisturbed position.
          • Wavelength- distance between a point on once wave and the same point on the next.
      • Frequency- Number of waves produced by a source each second.
        • Unit- Hertz (Hz)
      • Diffraction- Waves meet a gap- waves spread to some extent into the area beyond gap.
      • Wave speed equation- V= F x (lambda) M
      • frequency and time period- 1 divided by Time Period- F= 1 divided by T
