- 1. water collects in cracks in rocks
- 2. Water freezes to form ice. Expansion causes stresses & cracks are enlarged
- 3. Fragment breaks off & collects as scree at the foot of the rockface
- Exfoliation
- 1. During day, expands
- 2. At night cools & contracts
- 3. Repeated cycle, leads to outer skin peeling with water, weakening the rock
