- PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
- Guidelines
- 1450 minutes a week
- bone strengthening, muscle toning and aerobic
- Most people don't meet guidelines
- minimise amount of time spent sedentary
- Need to find activity people will enjoy - not currently done!
- Interventions
- Walking
- Darker et al. (2009) PBC key determinant, and was increased. Change maintained 6+ weeks
- French, Stevenon & Michie (2012) large/sig increase in walking in combined intervention, increased SE too
- Weight Loss
- Bravata et al. (2009) pedometer use significantly reduced BMI
- General PA
- King et al. (1980)
- Kolt et al. (2007) 186 low active adults, RCT, telephone counselling. PA increased!
- Bravata et al. (2009) Pedometer use significantly increased PA by 27%
- Walking
- definitions
- Exercise: subcategory of PA which specifically aims to improve health
- PA: any movement of the body produced by skeletal muscles that results in energy expenditure
- Why is it a problem?
- CHD, diabetes, cost to NHS and lost work days
- only 1/2 women aged 45-54 years meet guidelines
- Physical activity decreases with age
- Models
- HBM
- perceived barriers have been shown to significantly predict/correlate with levels of PA (King et al. 1980)
- May be more useful for those who see PA as risk avoiding (King et al 1980)
- Evidence shows that parents and children don’t walk as much due to ‘perceived barriers’ (McDonald & Aalborg, 2009).
- SCT
- King et al (1980)elf-efficacy used a lot in research and mostly found to have positive associations with PA
- Booth et al (2000) high SE, regular friends/family participation, finding safe footpaths all significantly associated with being active
- Dzewatowski et al (1990) SCT variables significant predict PA (better than TPB)
- TPB
- Armitage (2005) PBC significant predictor of intentions. Successful prior performance increased perceptions of control.
- French, Stevenon & Michie (2012) 3 motivational & 3 volitional techniques.
- Dwewatowski et al. (1990) PBC, intention & attitudes predicted PA
- Dishman et al (2003) SE and satisfaction important. Intervention = direct effects on SE, goal setting and PA.
