    • Early Adulthood
      • Young Adults - 19-28 - Peak in physical performance
        • Reached full height and strength
        • Manual dexterity and reaction time at its peak
        • After this age - gradual loss in strength and speed
          • Also affected by diet, exercise and lifestyle
      • Pregnancy and Lactation
        • Early pregnancy - physical and emotional changes - mood swings common
        • 'Morning sickness' - due to increase in oestrogen
        • Progesterone responsible for maintaining pregnancy
        • Breasts changing - ******* darken - darken veins - increase blood supply for lactation
      • Women - 40's - produce less oestrogen
        • Monthly production of eggs slows
        • Peri-menopause
          • Av. 4 Years - Mood Swings, Night Sweats, Irregular/Heavy periods, Loss of libido, vaginal dryness
    • Later Adulthood
      • Further loss of strength, muscle tone - lack of stamina - falling common
      • Continuous loss of height - age 80 - may lose 5 cm - due to change in posture and compression of spinal discs and joints
      • Mobility and dexterity - more difficult
      • Heart - more susceptible to disease
      • Intellectual abilities - loss of nerve cells in brain - reduce ability for electrical signals to be transmitted around brain
      • Change in body stems/organs - result of disease and lifestyle
      • Confused for dementia - natural process - can be compensated e.g. driving slower
    • Middle Adulthood
      • Fertility reduces and ends in MENOPAUSE
        • Increase in hormones gonadotropins - continue egg production - cause irritability, night sweats and hot flushes
        • Reduction in sex hormones - shrinkage of sexual organs - loss of libido
        • Osteoporosis - due to reduction of sex hormone production
        • Lead to mood changes - depression and anxiety
          • Self-esteem and image - low - see less desirable to men
      • Middle age spread
        • Gain weight
        • Same amount of food - less active
      • Loss of skin tone, muscle tone - greying/thin of hair
    • Adolescence
      • Puberty = 'Period of rapid growth - young people reach biological maturity - able to reproduce
      • 11-13 = Girls 13-15 = Boys
        • Female - Oestrogen & Progesterone
          • Produced by ovaries - responsible for ovulation and menstruation
        • Males - Testosterone
          • Produced by testes - stimulate sperm production - lead to development of secondary sexual characteristic
      • Primary Sexual Characteristic
        • Enlargement of penis and testes
          • Spontaneous erections - blood flow into penis chambers
            • Testicles produce spermatozoa - begin ***********
        • Uterus enlarge - vagina lengthen
          • Ovaries - begin to release eggs
            • Menstrual Cycle commences
      • Secondary Sexual Characteristic
        • Changes in larynx - voice deepens
          • Hair growth - armpit, pubic area and face
            • Redistribution of muscle and fat tissue
        • Breast develop - areola swell and darken
          • Hair grow in armpits and pubic area
            • Redistribution of fat - cause hips to widen
