      • Began his career as a member of the socialist party.
        • He was familiar with the concept of the Industrial Workers of the World.
    • BELIEFS
      • Developed two notions:
        • The idea that people could only be free if they were not economically deprived,
        • The importance of collective action if African Americans were to gain equality.
    • UNION ACTIVITY
      • 1917: organised his first union
      • 1919 became president of the National Brotherhood of Workers of America
      • 1925 became the president of the BSCP (Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters)
      • 1955 became vice president of merged American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organisations (AFL-CIO)
