      • Major tactic was new: Du Bois had organised march in NY in 1917 and it ed to highly effective tactic of mass march on Washington in 1963
      • King dominated but Randolph organised
    • The following should be factored in when considering impact of Randolph on civil rights:
      • Understanding of power of non-violent mass demonstration was  Randolph's key contribution to civil rights movement.
      • He used economic power of organised labour
      • He put considerable pressure on Truman to end segregation in armed forced in 1948
      • Use of marches, demonstrations and effective organisation, working with white sympathisers and putting pressure on administrations paid off in long run, and these key tactics (derived in part from resistance to British rule in India under Mohandas Gandi) moved CR movement on more than other leaders had done, laid basis for King's success
    • Inspiration but did not organise support in comparable numbers
    • Washington saw importance of economic development  but had  no interest in political aims or mobilisation
    • Garvey could attract large numbers but aims were not specific enough to be achievable, Randolph key figure in linking aspiratitons and ideals of previous leaders with organisation necessary to put effective pressure on administrations
