  • Peter Trudgill
    • No language is better than another
      • All languages are complex structures, they meet the communi-cative needs of their speakers
        • If something can be conveyed in one language, it can be conveyed in every other in a round about way.
          • There is no 'linguistic yardstick' in evaluating one dialect or accent as better than another
            • Some believe that Standard English is the true English Language
              • Judgements about accents and dialects are in fact judgements about the area they come from and the social connotations of the area.
    • The Norwich Study Part 1
      • Trudgill interviewed people from different social backgrounds and analysed his own speech in these conversations
        • Trudgill noted that those interviewed dropped the 't' in conversation and used glottal stop
          • Trudgill also noted that he also mirrored these people and started using glottal stops.
            • Trudgill  was downward converging to the interviewees and when speaking to males more non-standard forms were used
      • The Norwich Study Part 2
        • There is a clear relationship between the usage of 'h' and social class in Norwich and Bradford
          • The higher the social class, the more usage of 'h'
            • Bradford upper middle class pronounced 88% of 'h's
              • Bradford lower working class pronounced 7% of 'h's
                • Norwich upper middle class pronounced 94% of 'h's
                  • Norwich lower working class pronounced 40% of 'h's
