  • Pentecostal Christianity
    • Overview
      • Movement involving many churches
      • Derived from day of Pentecost - Holy Spirit descended and led to disciples speaking many languages
        • Believe this was not one off event - can and does happen everyday.
      • Began among poor and disadvantaged in USA 1901
    • Speaking in tongues
      • Speaking in a language unknown to speaker - miracle
      • Evidence of baptism of the  Holy Spirit
      • 1901 - Ozman spoke in tongues and did not speak English for several days
    • Monotheistic
      • Rooted in experience - bible is word of God.
      • Accept all mainstream Christian beliefs.
      • Importance in believers direct experience of God - believers must experience  a once-for-all spiritual event
      • Don't baptise infants as young children aren't able to recognise their need for salvation.
    • Membership
      • Strong in black churches and 'mega churches'
        • South Korea - 1 church where 250,000 attend every Sunday
        • Just under 1 million in UK, and over 20 million in USA
        • Estimated 10% of Christians
        • Strong in developing world
    • Gifts of the Spirit
      • Supernatural abilities given to believers by God - heal the sick and perform miracles.
      • May handle snakes during service - gift of the spirit if done successfully.
    • Worship
      • Less formal and more emotionally expressive - worship with heart, body and soul.
      • Brings about experience of Gods presence, very dramatic and active - may dance and sing.
      • Can involve healing, trances and speaking in tongue.
      • Sunday morning services - possibly throughout week also, dependent on Church to Church.
    • Women
      • Dress modestly - don't wear anything that might make a man lust. No low shirts, makeup, jewellry.
        • Only skirts - pants make the contours of a womans body visible
        • No short hair.
      • Biblical passages forbidding women from usurping authority over men. A woman can teach if she submits to a mans leadership.
      • Although women can be in power, men have the overall power.
        • 'God given gender differences are to be protected and celebrated.'
