- Worked as a priest in York. He then became priest at St Jame's church in Colchester.
- Believed it was wrong that some people in England were very rich while others were very poor
- Balls church sermons criticising the feudal system upset his bishop.
- In 1366 he was removed from his post as Priest from the church
- He had no fixed job or home so began to travel
