- Pathogens and Lifestyle
- Micro-organisms as pathogens
- 1) Gain entry to the host
- 2) Colonise the host tissue
- 3) Resist the defences of the host
- 4) Cause damage to host tissue
- How do microogranisms get into the body?
- Penetrating one of the organisms interfaces with the environment
- They break skin as its thin, moist, large surface and good blood supply
- Digestive system: food and water carry pathogens into the stomach and intestines eg. Cholera
- Penetrating one of the organisms interfaces with the environment
- PATHOGEN: A MICROORGANISM THAT CAUSES DISEASE
- Pathogens cause disease
- Damagins host tissue: many pathogens break doen the membranes of host cells and can prevent tissue from funcyioning properly.
- Producing toxins: many bacterial pathogens produce toxins, such as cholera
- RISK- A MEASURE OF THE PROBABLITLY THAT DAMAGE TO HEALTH WILL OCCUR AS REULT OF HAZARD
- Meausure of a risk: ranges from 0% to 100%
- Hzard risks need a timescale ie. next month
- Lifestyle factors and cancer
- Smoking
- Diet
- Obesity
- Physical activity
- Snlight (UV)
- Reducing risks of cancer
- Give up smoking
- avoiding being overwight
- Reduce salt in diet
- Reduce cholesterol and saturated fat
- Regular exercise
