  • Pathogens and Disease
    • Bacteria
      • Single celled living organisms
      • Much smaller than animal and plant cells
      • Some are useful and are used to make food like yoghurt and cheese
      • Bacteria simply split in two inside the body
      • They often produce toxins (poisons) which affect the body
    • Virus
      • Smaller than bacteria
      • Regular shapes
      • Cause disease in every type of living organism, from humans to bacteria
      • Viruses take over the cells and as they reproduce, they destory the cells
      • They rarely produce toxins

          • Ignaz Semmelweis
            • His Work
              • Doctor in the mid-1850s
                • At the time many mothers died from childbed fever and people did not know why
                • He noticed that people did not wash their hands between dealing with patients
                • He believed that the fever was caused by something being passed on
                • He got medical students to wash their hands and less mothers died
              • Getting his work accepted
                • He showed his evidence to other doctors and he was mocked
                • Many people thought that  women getting the fever was God's punishment
                • No one had ever seen bacteria and viruses
                • Doctors didn't like the isea that they might have been spreading disease
                • Now his ideas are accepted

      • Infectious Diseases
        • Found all over the world
        • Mild - common cold and tonsillitus
        • Killers - tetanus, influenza and HIV/AIDs
        • Passed from person to person, so they are infectious
        • Caused by micro-organisms (pathogens) entering and attacking the body
        • Pathogens reproduce rapidly inside the body
      • Disease Symtoms
        • Commom symptons are headaches, rashes and high temperatures
        • These are caused by the damage or toxins made by the pathogens
        • Symtoms also appear for how your body responds
