    • the 1st intifada 1987
      • Immediate cause: Israeli army vehicle in Gaza crashed into a lorry killing 4 Palestinians
      • Long term causes
        • treatment of Palestinians - under Israeli military rule, harsh treatment
        • confiscation of land, Jewish settlement - land usually given to Jewish settlers, build roads and monitored the Palestinians
        • Judea and Samaria - what the West Bank was known as to the Israelis - promised to them by God
      • Israeli Response and its effects
        • Iron Fist policy- troops used tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets and even live ammunition
        • Might, force and beatings- mass arrests, special detention camps, by sept 1988 346 Palestinians had been killed
        • impact on world opinion- the world saw a modern army fighting against a people fighting for their human rights
        • impact in Israel - opinion was divided - some wanted more force some saw it as a popular uprising
        • Impact on US- sympathy for Palestinians, questioned Israeli tactics, 1988- US recognised the PLO as needed participant in peace talks
        • Impact on PLO- leaders showed willingness to recognise Israel- may lead to Palestinian state
    • the 2nd intifada 2000
      • Israeli Politician Sharon entered the Temple Mount in Jerusalem - also known as the Dome of the Rock and is the 3rd holiest place to Muslims - accompanied by 1000 police officers - seen as threat of israeli control by Palestinians
        • Demonstrations followed
      • Sharon became prime minister in 2007
      • Long term causes - lack of peace settlement, continued Israeli settlement on West Bank
      • HAMAS bombings in march 2002- 29 Israelis killed
      • Israeli raids into Palestinian towns and refugee camps - women and children killed, targeted assassinations
      • by May 2003, 2000 Palestinians and 760 Israelis killed
      • Israelis began to build a barrier around the West Bank - further in than the Green Line
      • Peace was made in Feb 2005 - Israelis and Palestinians met in Egypt and announced a ceasefire
