- P14 Light
- 14.1 Reflection of Light
- law of reflection angle of incidence = angle of reflection
- specular reflection - smooth surface, reflected in single direction
- diffuse reflection - rough surface, scattered in different directions
- image formed in plane mirror - virtual + upright
- 14.2 Refraction of Light
- refraction - change in direction when they travel across a boundary from 1 medium to another
- air into glass angle of refraction less than angle of incidence (towards normal)
- glass into air angle of refraction is more than angle of incidence (away from normal)
- 14.3 Light + Colour
- each colour in visible light spectrum has its own narrow band of wavelength + frequency
- stars + lamps have continuous wavelengths
- lasers + neon lamps have narrow range
- white light made of all colours (all transmitted)
- transparent - transmit translucent - let light pass but scattered or refracted opaque - absorb
- rod cells - detect light
- cone cells - detect colour
- 3 types - blue, red, green
- cone cells - detect colour
- object is red - absorb all colour, transmit red
- object is yellow - absorbs all light, transmits red + green
- each colour in visible light spectrum has its own narrow band of wavelength + frequency
- 14.4 Lenses
- look at ray diagrams
- convex (converging) bend inwards to principal focus (focal point)
- long sighted
- concave (diverging) parallel rays spread out to principal focus
- short sighted
