- P1.1
- Surfaces and Radiation
- Dark surfaces are good absorbers or infrared radiation.
- An object painted dull black and left in the sun will become hotter than the same object painted white.
- Dark surfaces are also good emitters of infrared radiation.
- An object painted black will transfer energy and cool down more quickly than the same object painted white
- Light, shiny surfaces are good reflectors of infrared radiation
- Dark surfaces are good absorbers or infrared radiation.
- Conduction
- Conduction in a metal is due to free electrons transferring energy inside the metal.
- Non-metals are poor conductors becuase they do not contain free electrons.
- Conduction occurs mainly in solids.
- Convection
- Convection occurs in fluids (Liquid or gas)
- When a fluid is heated it expands. The fluid becomes less dense and rises.
- The warm fluid is replaced by a cooler, denser fluid.
- Evaporation and Condensation
- Surfaces and Radiation
