  • Oxidation Rules
    • 1. Atoms in sample elements = 0 e.g He, Mg
    • 2. Group 1 metal atoms in a compound = +1
    • 3. Group 2 metal atoms in a compound = +2
    • 4. Fluorine atoms in a compound = -1
    • 5. Oxygen atoms in compounds = -2 (except in peroxides / when combined with fluorine
    • 6. Chlorine atoms in compounds = -1 (except when combined with fluorine or oxygen
    • 7. Hydrogen always has = +1, except in the hydrides of the metals in groups 1 + 2 = -1
    • 8. neutral species = 0
    • 9.  in an ion = equal to the charge on the ion
