- Candy is an outsider as he is old and has lost a hand, this makes him physically weaker then the other men on the ranch and unable to work.
- This makes him volnerableas he could be fired at any time and as he says "i won't ave no place to go, an' i can't get no more jobs".
- Candy is only able to do emasculating jobs like sweeping the years as he only has one hand.
