  • Outcomes and consequences of the Korean war
    • Key consequences1)The role of the UN was strengthened by the war.    2)North Korea was stopped from taking over the South. This resulted in victory for the USA who wanted to contain the spread of communism and defeat for the USSR who wanted to spread it.      3) The failure to unite Korea.          4) It confirmed exa-ctly how much influenc-e the USA had over the UN.  5) It failed to resolve any differences between the USA and the USSR.
    • Korea
      • Losses: -1.3 million military and civilian casualties.      -80% of Koreas industrial and government buildings were destroyed.       -1/10 of Korean civilians died. -1/2 of all housing and transport networks were destroyed.       -Both South and North Korea were bombed heavily but North suffered greater damage.         -many people in North Korea had to live in caves because the housing shortage was so severe.       -Failed to gain united Korea which is what they had fought for.
      • Gains:  -The border remained along the 38th parallel.           - Korea remained in a state of war (with no permanent peace treaty)despite the ceasefire.
    • USA
      • Losses: -$60 million spent on weapons in 1952 by the government.    -30,000 casualties.        -Failure to 'save' North Korea from communism.
      • Gains: -South Korea had been 'saved' from communism.  -The containment policy had seemed to work against communism in Asia.            -They became more determined to contain communism.
    • UN
      • Losses: -Arguments occurred which stated that the UN was controlled by the USA rather than the UN, which was just a 'puppet' of the USA. USA did provide most of the troops and weapons. The commander of the UN was American and took orders from the president of America.          -UN failed to unite North and South Korea and hold free elections.30,000+ casualties, most of which were US troops.             -they were only able to act because of the USSR's absence from the Security Council.
      • Gains: -role of the UN was strengthened by the war.                 -gained respect for making quick and decisive actions.             -fulfilled one of its aims which was to use combined forces to stop aggression. This was something that the League of Nations (UN's predecessor) had failed to do in the build up to WW2.                -USSR returned to various UN organisations.
    • USSR
      • Losses: -the war heightened tensions with the USA and forced the USSR into an expensive arms race with USA.                -USSR failed to 'win' South Korea for communism.
      • Gains: -achieved a closer relationship with the fellow communist state- China.
