- Our Biases: Implicit Bias I
- We are biased when we disposed to judge others according to some pre-existing stereotyped conception of them
- Examples:
- Gender Bias
- Racial or Ethnic Bias
- Class Bias
- Examples:
- Distinguish between explicit and implicit bias:
- Explicit bias
- You endorse the stereotype
- Implicit bias:
- You don't endorse the stereotype
- But your behaviour manifests a stereotyped conception
- Explicit bias
- How do we find out if we have any implicit biases?
- E.g. Stereotyped conception of women as nurturers/caregivers?
- Implicit Bias test
- IAT measures relative strength of association between categories ad attributes
- Suppose you have a strong/moderate/slight positive association between female names and family-related words and a strong/moderate/slight negative association between female names and career-related words
- Worries about IATs?
- Are the results caused by the order?
- Yes, but the difference is very small
- Each participant is randomly assigned to an order
- Are the results related to handedness or hand-eye coordination?
- No. People with better hand-eye coordination might be faster, but IATs test the difference in time response of each participant
- Are the results caused by the order?
- What do IATs show?
- If you have an association one way or another, that shows that you have biases or implicit preferences.
- Does this mean you're sexist or prejudiced?
- Implicit Biases
- Unconscious biases that affect way we perceive, evaluate, or interact with people from groups that our biases 'target'
- We are biased when we disposed to judge others according to some pre-existing stereotyped conception of them
