  • Otto
    • Idea of the Holy (1917)
      • Unusual & uncanny moments, when a person feels worthless/overwhelmed/ in awe.
        • 'Numinous'
      • Everybody can experience the numinous.
      • Traits of numinous experiene: Passivity, Ineffability.
      • The ineffability aspect makes in non-rational for anyone, including the recipient.
    • Numinous: 'mysterium tremendum et fascinans'.
      • Fearful & fascinating mystery.
      • Culpepper: "drawn into... attracted and fascinated in ways we cannot fully explain."
    • Numinous dread.
      • CS Lewis: If we knew there was a tiger in a room, we would know we were in danger/feel fear. If we were told there was a ghost in a room, we would feel a different kind of fear, one that was attractive, as we have no idea if we are in danger from a ghost, as we have no experience.
    • The Human Soul.
      • Like God, we cannot fully understand/ comprehend the human soul.
      • Because we possess something that is numinous, we can all have a numinous experience (with God).
