    • Literary Influences
      •    The roots of Shakespearean tragedy reach back to folklore and to medieval church practises and teaching. 
      •     Stories echoed that church’s teaching which insisted on the brevity of human glory, the fickleness of fate and the power of divine providence: God’s intentions for humankind. 
      •  Vice was a particularly enjoyed character of the morality plays, a trickster who tempted young men away from virtue. He was meant to portray evil, an enemy of mankind and an agent of the devil: his humour and trickery endeared him to audiences. Iago is an example of a character who was inspired by Vice. 
    • Women
      •    Women lacked rights and were considered subordinate and inferior  
      • Women’s statue and roles were subject to the tyranny of patriarchy, ‘I do perceive here a divided duty’ 
      •     Iago jokes after the arrival in Cyprus, slandering women: says they are talkative, dishonest and unchaste which could be said to reveal the deep insecurities about female behaviour and therefore arguably a fear of women should they cuckold a man and bring his honour and reputation into question. 
    • Religion
      •   Contrast between Queen Mary who was  a strict Roman Catholic burning protestants at the stake and the persecution of Catholics under Queen Elizabeth’s reign resulted in Jacobean society a country where Catholics were distrusted and feared. 
      • ·         England was a superstitious country who believed in omens and portents. Witches and witchcraft were the object of morbid and fevered fascination throughout the reign of Queen Elizabeth, ‘practiser of arts inhibited’ ‘tis true, there’s magic in the web of it’ 
    • Attitudes to race
      •   The slave trade had begun and thus a few black people would be seen on London streets (usually servants) 
        • Regarded as exotic, interestingly strange but potentially savage, threatening or dangerous. 
      •   In the 20th Century the play provided a significant symbol in the struggle for black emancipation 
      •    The thought of interracial marriage was abhorrent to most English men and women. 
    • Venice
      •    Venice was a republic with a reputation for religious and political tolerance 
      •  Venetian women had a reputation for being sophisticated and sexually active. It was notorious for prostitutes 
      •    In 16th Century it was involved in a long struggle against the Turks.
