        • Favoured rapprochment; re-establishment of friendly relations with Communist EG and other Soviet bloc nations
          • 1970 visits East Germany in both March and May
            • MOSCOW TREATY 12 Aug 1970. Nicholls: 'foundation stone of Ostpolitik. Non Agression Pact with USSR and recognition of Polish Frontiers.
              • Soviets had in effect gained WG recognition of European Empire (significance for detente)
                • Poland December 1970, Czech June 1973. Confirms 1945 borders.
              • Four Power Treaty signed 3 September 1971. Agreements on transit traffic and relaxation of border/postal controls in Berlin
                • Basic Treaty Dec 1972. GDR virtually recognised
