          • 1970 visits East Germany in both March and May
            • MOSCOW TREATY 12 Aug 1970. Nicholls: 'foundation stone of Ostpolitik. Non Agression Pact with USSR and recognition of Polish Frontiers.
              • Soviets had in effect gained WG recognition of European Empire (significance for detente)
