  • osmosis, diffusion and active transport
    • osmosis
      • net movement of water molecules through a partially permeable membrane into a region of higher concentration.
    • diffusion
      • movement of particles from a hi concentration to a low concentration
        • EG. ciliated cells, villi in S.Intestine, gas exchange in lungs
          • Aveoli - large surface area, thin walls, good blood supply.
    • active transport
      • movement of molecules across a cell membrane into a region of higher concentration - requires energy
        • root hair cells - absorbing water & mineral ions
        • allows nutrients to be taken into the blood despite concentration gradient is the wrong way.
