  • Osmosis
    • MOVEMENT OF WATER MOLECULES ACROSS A PARTIALLY PERMEABLE MEMBRANCE FROM A REGION OF HIGH WATER CONCENTRATION TO A REGION OF LOW CONCENTRATION
    • Differences in the concentrations of solutions inside and outside cell cause water to move into or out of the cell
    • Osmosis in animals
      • If cytoplasm dilute water leaves cell
      • Problem: if solution outside cell mroe dilute than cell contents water move into cell and burst, opposite cell shrink and shrivel
    • Osmosis in plants
      • Cells are hard and rigid - vacuole swell - keeps plant firm
      • Plants need fluid surrounding teh cells to always have a higher concentration of water
