- Osmosis
- MOVEMENT OF WATER MOLECULES ACROSS A PARTIALLY PERMEABLE MEMBRANCE FROM A REGION OF HIGH WATER CONCENTRATION TO A REGION OF LOW CONCENTRATION
- Differences in the concentrations of solutions inside and outside cell cause water to move into or out of the cell
- Osmosis in animals
- If cytoplasm dilute water leaves cell
- Problem: if solution outside cell mroe dilute than cell contents water move into cell and burst, opposite cell shrink and shrivel
- Osmosis in plants
- Cells are hard and rigid - vacuole swell - keeps plant firm
- Plants need fluid surrounding teh cells to always have a higher concentration of water
