  • DIFFUSION AND OSMOSIS
    • diffusion
      • diffusion is the net movement of particles in a gas or liquid to an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
      • leaves are adapted to increase the rate of diffusion of carbon dioxide and oxygen
        • this happens by having gaps between the spongy mesophyll cells
        • due to large surface area
        • this happens due to special openings call the stomata which are spaced out
      • the rate of diffusion is not a fixed quantity
        • this is due to a steeper concentration gradient
        • also due to a short distance for a molecule to travel
    • osmosis
      • osmosis is a type of diffusion
      • osmosis is the movement of water across a partially permeable membrane from an area of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration
