    • Pain relief was going against God
    • People distrusted anaesthetics because they were new
    • The number of patients dying shortly after operation increased when anaesthetics were introduced so death rated increased!
    • It took longer for doctors to perform operations when they had to use anaesthetics especially as since then surgeons were under pressure to perform operations very quickly!
    • No-one knew the long term risks of anaesthetics
    • Some surgeons needed/wanted their patients to be awake for the operation to see if anything went wrong or simply for the entertainment!
