    • Emerged in response to laissez-faire capitalism
      • Central figure = Benjamin Disraeli
        • Felt capitalism encouraged self interest, undermined social responsibility + threatened to split Britain

      • First coined by Harold Macmillan, considered a mixed system
      • Clear link between 20th century Britain and Disraeli's thinking
    • Influenced aspects of Conservative thinking and policy
      • Cameron- 'compassionate conservatism'
      • Thatcher- 'shared society'
        • Focus on the responsibilities we have to one another
