- Omnipotence of God II
- God can do anything?
- Can God do the logically impossible
- Some might say yes - he is not restrained by ordinary laws of logic
- But if God could have made us free but always do good he didn't - so he is all-good?
- Aquinas would argue against saying it's not a 'thing' - it's a 'pseudo problem'
- Can God do the logically impossible
- God can do anything logically possible within his nature
- Aquinas instead of focusing on what God 'can do', looks at how His omnipotence should be understood as his authority
- As creator + sustainer of the universe
- Necessary being, first cause
- BUT this very transcendent God is quite removed from a traditional Biblical view of God who speaks the world into existence, saves Israelites in Egypt, the Incarnation
- Wiles would agree with this
- As creator + sustainer of the universe
- Aquinas/WLC
- Omnipotence
- Everything logically possible within His perfect Nature
- Problems
- Questions over His Nature
- Religious Language may point out that we cannot know God's nature fully
- Can God change His nature? ~ did he change His nature to become incarnate? John 1:1: 'the word became flesh'
- Omnipotence "minimally restrained" (limited) God - must be able to choose less loving option to be truly omnipotent.
- Omnipotence
- God can do anything?
