        • US president Jimmy Carter said they would Boycott the games if the Soviet army did not withdraw their troops from Afghanistanin an month
          • the british hockey, fencing and equestrian teams also boycott only 6000 competitors perforemd compared to expected 10,000

      • Boycott lead by Soviet Union
      • in response to usa boycotting moscow, the soviet union boycotted the LA games along with East Germany, Poland, Bulgaria, Hungary and Cuba
        • the soviet union blammed the commercialisation of the games and lack of security measures accusing USA of using the games for political reasons
          • however many commentators saw the boycott as a retaliation for the 1980 olympic boycott by USA
