  • Obedience: Milgram's Research
    • Procedure
      • recruited 40 male pps, through newspaper adds. Pps aged between 20-50. given $4.50 for turning up.
      • confederate= learner, confederate= expermineter and naive pps = teacher
      • learner in seperate room from teacher and experimenter, strapped to electrodes and 'shocked'. teacher gave learner pairs of words to remeber if they didnt say the correct word pair they were shocked, teacher told to increase shock each time. teacher not told shocks were fake.
      • shocks started at 15v and went up to 450v. at 300v the learner pounded on wall and gave no further responses.
      • when teacher turned to experimenter for guidance he gave standard instructions: please continue or you have no other choice.
    • Findings
      • found all pps went up to 300v. and 12.5% stopped at 300v
      • 65% continued to 450v.
      • qualitative data= pps showed signs of anxiety and extreme tension - sweat, tremble etc...
      • pps had follow-up questionnaire (once debriefed) 84% reported they felt glad to participate, and 74% said they learnt something of personal importance.
    • Conclusion
      • prior to study Milgram asked 14 psychology students the results they predicted no more than 3% would go to 450v. Actually results= unusual
    • Strengths
      • concerns about validity-pps didnt believe the set up.
