- Obedience - Milgram (1963, 1974)
- Conducted a classical experiment on obedience.
- Used the cover story that he was conducting an experiment to investigate the effects of punishment on learning.
- One teacher (real participant), one learner (confederate), both male, asked to complete a paired association learning task.
- Learner strapped to an 'electric chair' that was allegedly attached to a shock generator in an adjacent room.
- Shock generator: 30 switches, marked with voltage that ranged from 15-450V, with 15 volt increments from one switch to the next.
- Participants were instructed to give a shock to the learner each time he gave a wrong response and to increase the shock level by one each time.
- The authority figure gave a series of prompts in order when participants refused to continue.
- 1. "Please continue" or "Please go on."
- 2. "The experiment requires that you continue."
- 3. "It is absolutely essential that you continue."
- "You have no other choice, you must go on."
- Dependent measure: maximum shock administered before the participant refused to continue.
