- The researcher simply observes without taking part.
- Preferred by Positivists for a number of reasons :
- 1. Quicker, larger and more representative sample which can be studied
- 2.Observer remains detached, therefore they do not lose objectivity
- 3.Uses standardized observational categories
- Interpretivists reject structured observations due to the imposition of researcher's view on reality.
