- He first presented his Law of Octaves in 1864
- He put all the known elements at the time into order of relative atomic mass.
- When he did this he saw that every element was similar to the element eight places further on.
- Newlands' table showed a pattern or a periodic pattern of properties, but it was flawed as, for example, he put iron in the same group as oxygen and sulfur which are two non metals.
- As a result of these flaws, his table was not accepted by scientists.
