      • Old collectivist ideas of labour were replaced by a greater emphasis on the ability of the individual to reach their own goals
      • Lower taxation, Stress on education, Contracts awarded to private companies
    • Free market
      • Labour accepted that free market capitalism was the best form of creating wealth
      • Trade unions wanted powers restored but gov refused
    • Social justice
      • Shared many of the beliefs of traditional labour
      • Wealth creation rather than redistribution  - laws to outlaw discrimination Minimum wage heightened
    • Welfare state
      • New Labour supported using the Welfare state as a safety net
      • Blair preferred using public borrowing rather than high tax
    • Ethical foreign policy
      • Britain has a responsibility to care for poorer parts of the world
      • Increasing foreign aid and cancelling third world debt
      • Intervening in human rights
    • Law and order
      • Tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime
      • Restrict civil lierties in their camapgin against crime and terrorism - widened police powers and proposed identity cards
