- When action potential reaches the tips of the axon terminals,neurotransmitters (chemicals that alter activity in neurons) are released into the microscopic space between 2 neurons called synapse
- When the chemical molecules pass over the synapse, they attach to special receiving areas on the surface of the next neuron called receptor sites
- Not all neurotransmitters trigger an action potential but they change the likelihood of it by exciting or inhibiting the other neuron
