- Approximately 9000 people were killed, 22,000 injured.
- Triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest
- Entire villages were flattened especially those near to the epicentre
- 1.7 million children became homeless.
- Secondary Effects
- Rebuildingthe economy is said to cost $5 billion, 20% of Nepal's GDP
- Malnutrition in children worsened after the earthquake.
- Human traffickers took advantage of the situation by preying on the survivors.
- Landslides occured in the Langtang valley
- Immediate Responses
- 90% of the Nepalese army were sent out to rescue and search for people.
- International aid agencies (red cross) started evacuating the critically wounded and treating them.
- Locals volunteered to helped crisis mapping to plan emergency aid work with the UN and the Red Cross
- Long-term responses
- India decided to donate $1 billion in cash and materials to help Nepal.
- UNICEF distributed tents, water, hygiene kits, purification tablets and buckets to prevent the outbreak of disease
- Building codes are being implemented in the reconstruction of infrastructure and housing .
- A project called Kathmandu Valley Earthquake Risk Management has been created to educate people about earthquake risks
