- Germany wanted an empire, they wanted to conquer Africa bringing big powers in to conflict
- Germany had began to build up its empire making Britain very concerned about the Kaiser when he was elected
- Italians wanted a empire
- Austria-Hungary wanted to expanded its empire, they then annexed Bosnia in 1908.
- MILIITARISM
- the attempt to build up the counties armed forces
- A prime example of this is the arms race between Germany and Britain. it caused a lot of tension between the two countries
- When Germany passed the naval laws in 1898 and 1900 it later caused in 1906 the naval race but at the end Britain had built more leaving Germany angry
- ALLIANCES
- Russia wanted to support Serbia as they had a similar language
- THE TRIPLE ENTENTE 1907
- Made up of Britain France and Russia
- Britain had promised to defend Belgium in the treaty or Westminster 1839
- THE TRIPLE ALLIANCE 1882
- Made up of germany, austria-hungary and italy
- Italy supported France in the Moroccan Crisis 1906 & 1911
- Austrians wanted to attack Serbia but they knew Russia would back up seriba
- Austria knew they wouldn't win Serbia without support from Germany

- The belief their country is better than any other. it led to countries being aggressive and assertive
