- Involves and engages the audience by speaking to them directly
- Sets the tone for tragedy
- Introduces us to the characters in the play and gives us info about them
- appears dressed in black could signify mourning or death
- No character speaks to him on the stage. The fact they don't acknowledge him gives him a ghost like quality
- Introduces us to themes of fate, destiny and superstition
- But at the end he asks the audience to consider if it was social forces rather than 'fate' that caused the tragedy
- Key role is foreshadowing
