  • Naming Organic Compounds
    • Carbons-Prefix:    1 - Meth-           2- Eth-              3-Prop-              4 -But-              5- Pent-            6- Hex-             7- hept-             8- Oct-              9- Non-           10-Dec-
      • Look for the longest chains of carbon atoms containing the functional group.
      • Carbon atoms must be in a continuous row.
      • Ending tells you what type of a carbon structure you have
    • Carbons -Alkyl group:             1-Methyl         2-Ethyl            3-Propyl          4-Butyl
    • How to name them...
      • Hypens(-) separate names from numbers.
      • Comma's seperate numbers from numbers.
      • Should be alphabetical order.
      • If  identical side chains appear more than once..prefix with di,tri tetra,pent and hexa
    • NAMING ALKENES: a number is used before the -ene  if there are two or more possible positions.
    • Naming cyclic compounds: Cyclic compounds are named using the prefix          -cyclo.
    • Naming Alcohols: number of carbon which is attached to is written before the -ol
    • Naming Aldehydes :  have the suffix -al
    • Naming Ketones:     suffix -one.
    • Naming Carboxylic acid: group is            (-cooh) with the suffix -oic
    • Halogen - prefix fluorine-fluoro chlorine-chloro bromine-bromo iodine-iodo
    • E is taken away when followed by a vowel.. E is kept when followed by consonant.
  • E is taken away when followed by a vowel.. E is kept when followed by consonant.
