  • Mutations
    • Mutations = changes to the genetic code (occur continuously).
      • Changes the sequence of the DNA bases which produces a genetic variant.
    • If the shape of an enzyme's active site changes its substrate will no longer bind. Structural proteins like collagen could lose its strength.
    • Insertions:        a new base is inserted into the DNA base sequence. Insertions change the way the groups of 3 bases are 'read' changes the amino acid they code for..
      • Can change more than 1 amino acid, knock-on effect.
    • Substitutions:   mutations is when a random base in the DNA base sequence is changed to a different base.
