  • Multiple attachments: The role of the father
    • Where a child has formed two or more attachments.
    • Schaffer and Emerson found that by 18 months 87% of babies had at least 2 attachments.
    • Traditionally research has focused on the mother-infant attachment and neglected the role of the father and how they may influence a child's development.
    • Grossman: carried out a longitudinal study looking at both parent's behaviour and its relationship to the quality of the child's attachments into their teens. Research showed the quality of the infants attachment to the mother (not dad) influenced the quality of the child's attachments in adolescence.
      • MacCallum and Golombok found children growing up in single or same-sex parent families do not develop any different to those in 2 parent heterosexual families.
        • Children with secure attachments to their fathers go onto have better relationships with their peers, less problem behaviours and more able to regulate their emotions.
          • Geiger showed fathers play interactions are more exciting and pleasurable than mothers, while mothers are more nurturing and affectionate.
