- Multi-Store Model of memory
- Devised by Atkinson and Shiffrin in 1968
- Short Term Memory (STM)
- Short Duration - 18-20 seconds without active rehearsal, up to 30 seconds with.
- Active rehearsal (e.g. repetition of exam notes) can make information last longer.
- Limited Capacity - there is a limit to the amount of information that can be stored in the STM (7 +/- 2)
- Long Term Memory (LTM)
- Unlimited Duration - memory can last in LTM for an infinite amount of time.
- Unlimited capacity - no limit to amount of information that can be stored in the LTM
- Information can be transferred from STM to LTM by active rehearsal.
