  • MULTI-STORE MEMORY MODEL(ATKINSON & SHIFFIN (1968)
    • SENSORY MEMORY this store gathers infomation from our senses and recieves a wide variety of information
      • not a lot of info gets attention, data is in the sensory store for a very breif period of time and is held in the form in which it is recieved. if info is attended to it moves to the SORT TERM MEMORY
        • Echoic = sound
        • Iconic -visual
      • SPERLING tested iconic memory by flashing groups of letters then asked p's to recall
        • SUPPOURTS as couldn't renember much showing info is forgotten quickly from SM
    • SHORT TERM MEMORY information is attended to once it reaches here.Information is fragile and is usually forgotten though a process of decay
      • ATKINSON AND SHIFFRIN believed it had a limited capacity of about 7 chunks, and a duration of up to 30 seconds
      • information was held in a phonetic format so it had to be translated from the format that it was recieved in
      • in order to reach the LONG TERM it needs to be rehearsed, MAINTENANCE REHERSAL
      • MILLERS magic nuber 7 didgit span test
        • SUPPOURT AS most people renemberd 7 +/- 2
          • Repreical
            • SPERLING tested iconic memory by flashing groups of letters then asked p's to recall
              • SUPPOURTS as couldn't renember much showing info is forgotten quickly from SM
    • LONG TERM MEMORY if info is rehearsed it enters the LTM store. They believed th emore info was rehearded the longer it would be renembered.
      • A&S believed that LT had ab ublimited capacity and unlimited duration store where information was mainly held by meaning (SEMANTICALLY ENCODED)
        • BAHRIC year book
    • KF suffered brain damage, which had no effect on LTM but affected STM
      • infro got in to LTM with out going through STM
      • only some times of info he hd problems with
      • suppourts that there are two stores, questions wether info has to go STM- LTM
      • Androcentric
    • STRENGTHS
      • One of the first modles, inspired research
      • Aplicability
    • WEAKNESSES
      • Mistaken focus on amount of info stored as somethings are easier to renember than others
      • BRADDLEY AND ITCH working model of memory
      • Ethnocentric
      • Reductionist
